Visa interview preparation

For most applicants, completing the application is not the end of the process. You will generally meet a consular officer who decides whether you qualify, subject to limited interview-waiver exceptions.

What might I be asked?

The interview may be brief, which is exactly why being prepared matters. Questions depend on your circumstances, but applicants may be asked about:

  • Why you want to visit the United States
  • Where you intend to stay
  • How long you intend to visit
  • Who is paying for the trip
  • Your employment
  • Your family
  • Previous international travel
  • Previous visits to the United States
  • Your ties to your home country
  • Why you will return home

The point is not a script

Memorised answers do not help you, and a consular officer has heard them before. The objective is to understand your own application and be ready to answer clearly and truthfully.

We go through what to expect, which documents to bring for your situation, and the questions applicants in similar circumstances are commonly asked. Then the conversation on the day is yours.

Prepare for your interview

Nothing is filed without your confirmation, and you can stop and come back at any point with your reference number.
